Caltanissetta
Situated in the centre of the Sicily, Caltanissetta has remote origins. Its name refers to the old Nissa, locality a time Sikan and then Greek. Then the Arabs added the prefix Qal'at (or Kalat, Castle), creating the composed term Qal'atan-nisa (Women's Castle), from wich derives the modern name of the city.
Today Caltanissetta is a modern city that lives principally of agricultur, industry and craftsmanship.

The Cathedral of Caltanissetta, the most important building of cult in the city, was built between the 1570 and the 1622. Of a Neoclassical style, has a latin-cross plan and it presents three aisles separated from two orders of columns. The lateral aisles are wealthy from niches or cashed altars, with Virgins statues, the Rise Jesus and different Saints. Splendid are also the plasters and the frescoes of Guglielmo Borremans (1720) that adorn the columns, the altars and the vault. Of great interest there are also the barroque organ, painted in first quality gold (1601) and the statue on San Michele Arcangelo (patron of the city) of the XVII century, work of the sculptor Stefano Li Volsi.
